I support the campaign because of the difficulty I now face in meeting the cost of living. I now have to support my daughter in college in addition to all my other expenses, and when I calculated it by referring to old payslips I discovered my take home pay is roughly what it was in 2006. However, the cost of everything isn’t. I now am in my 16th year in my current employment and pay freezes, pension levy etc have entirely wiped out any financial benefit that may accrue from years of service. Coupled with that, the quantity of work has increased, as has its complexity and degree of responsibility. In the private sector, this would be recognised by incentive and bonus schemes, but instead we in the public sector have had to endure years of criticism from politicians and the media who all support the myth that the public sector has suffered little or nothing during the busy period.
